High-Temperature Bearing Grease Selection: Thickener Trade-Offs, Compatibility and Test Reports

High-Temperature Bearing Grease should be selected from the bearing duty, not from a generic “high-temperature” label. For procurement engineers, the essential task is to convert the hottest bearing-ring temperature, load, speed, water exposure, shear demand, current grease and bearing application into a controlled shortlist of lithium complex, polyurea or calcium sulfonate complex products. The shortlisted product must then be supported by application-matched test documentation and a defined changeover approach.

The principal trade-off is qualitative rather than a universal ranking. Lithium complex grease is associated with thermal stability, water resistance and load-carrying properties, but may be less effective for cold-temperature pumpability. Polyurea grease is associated with thermal stability and high-temperature performance, while shear stability requires specific review. Calcium sulfonate complex grease is associated with high-temperature stability, water resistance and load-carrying properties. These family-level characteristics are useful for screening; they do not replace the technical data sheet, the complete formulation, or qualification of the actual product proposed. [1][6]

1. Define the Bearing Duty Before Selecting a High-Temperature Grease

A technically useful RFQ starts with bearing conditions that can distinguish products, rather than with an open request for “high-temperature grease.” Record the temperature at the hottest bearing ring, not only ambient temperature. SKF states that standard greases have a practical upper temperature limit of 100 °C at the ring with the highest temperature; above that point, special greases or automatic greasing systems should be considered. This is technical guidance for standard greases, not a universal maximum temperature for every high-temperature grease. [2]

For each bearing position, the buyer should define the following inputs before comparing candidate grease families:

  • Temperature: hottest-ring temperature, temperature trend, and whether heat is continuous or intermittent.
  • Load: whether the bearing duty creates a particular need to review load-carrying capability.
  • Speed and shear: whether high speed, churning or other operating conditions make shear stability a decision variable.
  • Water exposure: splash, washdown, humidity or other water contact that makes water resistance a screening requirement.
  • Delivery method: manual application, centralized system, or an automatic greasing arrangement; identify whether pumpability is material to the installation.
  • Application boundary: industrial ball bearing or automotive wheel bearing. These applications require different review of grease-life evidence.
  • Existing lubricant: current grease product and thickener type, if known, plus the planned replacement method.

Commercial portfolios associate these thickener families with applications including industrial, automotive, construction, mining, electric-motor, fan and blower service. Such positioning can help identify candidate products, but it is not proof that a product is qualified for a specific bearing position. [7]

2. Thickener-Family Screening for High-Temperature Bearing Service

Use the matrix below as a first-pass question set. It deliberately avoids numerical product ranking because the available descriptions are qualitative and do not use one common test protocol.

Sources: qualitative thickener-family descriptions. [1][6]

Lithium complex: balance thermal, water, load and pumpability questions

Lithium complex grease is a reasonable initial candidate where the duty calls for thermal stability together with water resistance and load-carrying properties. Its stated limitation in cold-temperature pumpability means that a buyer should not assume that a high-temperature lithium complex product will be suitable for every low-temperature delivery or centralized lubrication condition. Ask the supplier to address the actual temperature profile and grease-delivery arrangement, rather than accepting a family name as a complete specification. [1]

Polyurea: high-temperature screening with explicit shear review

Polyurea is non-metallic and is described as having antioxidant capability, thermal stability and high-temperature performance. It is also described as less effective for shear stability. Therefore, where speed, churning or mechanical working makes shear a key concern, the RFQ should require product-specific evidence and an application statement. A general polyurea claim is not enough to establish suitability for a particular bearing. [1]

Calcium sulfonate complex: screen for combined temperature, water and load demands

Calcium sulfonate complex grease is described as providing oxidation and thermal stability at higher operating temperatures, water resistance and load-carrying properties. It is therefore a logical family to include in a shortlist where elevated temperature, wet exposure and load are all material selection inputs. The selection still requires product-level data because the thickener family does not disclose the complete formulation or its performance under the buyer’s duty conditions. [1][6]

3. Control Grease Changeover and Compatibility Risk

“Compatible” does not mean that two greases may be mixed without a controlled decision. SKF publishes a grease-compatibility matrix covering, among other systems, lithium complex, polyurea and calcium sulphonate complex greases. The matrix is a useful screening resource, but product-specific exceptions and the current matrix notation must be reviewed. For critical applications, compatibility should be confirmed through an appropriate validation plan. [3]

Compatibility-matrix availability and covered thickener families: [3]

If the existing grease is unknown, that uncertainty is itself a procurement risk. The buyer should not treat a new product’s high-temperature label as a basis for direct top-up. First identify the installed product or define a controlled replacement method that addresses residual material and validates the affected bearing application.

4. Request Test Reports That Match the Bearing Application

A grease-life report is decision-useful only when the test method’s scope matches the proposed application. ASTM D3336-20b covers evaluation of lubricating-grease performance in ball bearings operating under light loads, high speeds and elevated temperatures. It is the relevant method to review when the proposed use is within that industrial ball-bearing test scope. [4]

ASTM D3527-21 covers a laboratory procedure for evaluating high-temperature life performance of automotive wheel-bearing grease under prescribed conditions. It is relevant to automotive wheel-bearing grease, not direct evidence for industrial bearing qualification. [5]

ASTM D3527-21High-temperature life performance of automotive wheel-bearing grease under prescribed laboratory conditions.Review evidence for automotive wheel-bearing grease applications.Direct qualification evidence for industrial bearings.

Method scopes: [4][5]

Neither ASTM method is a certification, an OEM approval, or an automatic market-access conclusion. They are laboratory test methods with defined application scopes. When comparing reports, require the supplier to identify the exact ASTM edition, product tested, bearing application, reported conditions, result units and any departures from the method or buyer specification. Results from D3336 and D3527 should not be merged into one ranking because their scopes are different. [4][5]

5. Convert the Selection into a Technical RFQ and Qualification Plan

The practical output of screening is a controlled technical RFQ, not an unsupported family preference. The following sequence keeps service conditions, compatibility and test evidence connected.

Selection-to-Qualification Decision Flow
  1. Collect hottest-ring temperature, load, speed, water exposure, delivery method, equipment type and existing-grease information.
  2. Use Table 1 to create a family-level shortlist and define the questions that each product must answer.
  3. Obtain product-specific TDS and an application-suitability statement from each bidder.
  4. Identify the existing and proposed thickener systems; complete compatibility screening and define the replacement procedure.
  5. Match laboratory evidence to the bearing application: D3336 review for the specified industrial ball-bearing scope, or D3527 review for automotive wheel-bearing grease scope.
  6. Approve a sample or controlled application validation for critical equipment only after documentation and changeover controls are accepted.

For technical bid evaluation, treat missing scope information as a clarification item, not as neutral evidence. A report that names a high-temperature test but does not identify the tested product, intended bearing application or conditions cannot establish that the proposed grease is suitable for the buyer’s bearing duty.

Conclusion

High-temperature bearing grease selection should begin with the hottest bearing-ring temperature and the full operating duty, then proceed through thickener-family screening, compatibility control and application-matched test-report review. Lithium complex, polyurea and calcium sulfonate complex each offer useful screening characteristics, but none is a universal best choice. For industrial ball-bearing review, ASTM D3336-20b is relevant to its stated light-load, high-speed and elevated-temperature scope. For automotive wheel-bearing grease, ASTM D3527-21 addresses a separate high-temperature life test scope. [1][4][5]

Buyers can use the specification and qualification fields in this guide to structure a technical RFQ and compare supplier responses on a consistent basis.
